Research domains
My research concerns the modeling and numerical simulation of advanced manufacturing processes (welding, metal additive manufacturing), centered on the dynamics of melt pool and their multiphysics interactions. These models integrate specific methods to take into account the presence of moving interfaces and phase changes. This work aims to very finely simulate the instability mechanisms of the melt pool and their impact on the quality of parts, with an effort to optimize models for complex industrial configurations.
Main axes:
Multiphysics coupling: Integration of heat transfer, fluid flow, electromagnetic and mass transfer phenomena.
Source/matter interaction: Simulation of the material addition (wire, powder) and energy (laser, arc) and their impact on fusion, solidification and defect formation.
Instabilities of the melt pool: Study of convective movements (Marangoni effect,...), Lorentz forces and thermal gradients causing instabilities, and their role in the appearance of porosities, or surface defects.
Innovative numerical methods: Development of approaches (Level Set, ALE) to process multiple laser reflections, study the formation of the vapor capillary (keyhole) and reduce calculation times.
